We often hold a lot of tension and emotional memory in our body.
Tension is the product of muscles that remain contracted in the body for long periods of time. These places of tension can often cause “knots,” within the muscle tissue. This happens as a result of holding tension for years due to which our fascia can coagulate and form shield which is the hardened fascia in different part of the body. Over time, these knots can cause pain that’s either tender to the touch or constantly radiates. This can be in our shoulders, neck, hips, or lower back; it’s often personal – and reoccurring.
Darragh Simon; owner of a wellness and message therapist says;
“You may not realize that you’re contracting your muscles, but your shoulders are creeping up toward your ears and you’re clinching your jaw and when the muscles are tense, blood can’t flow freely to the area.”
However we may start to recognize our areas of tension body and can even sense it before it truly takes hold. One way of doing it is through self-touch. When we consciously and loving sooth our body, we use self tough to create safety for the body. We calm our nervous system and allow our body to soften causing the blood circulation to improve and giving us access to more of ourselves.
A few of these self-soothing touch gestures can be helpful to calm the nervous system and untangle the tension in our body:
- Rubbing hands together and placing them on the eyes for 15 seconds.
- Slowly nod yes and no and hold in each position. Gently message your neck in circular motion in both the direction.
- Drop and roll your shoulders away from your ears
- Close your hands into a fist and then release by spreading figures.
- Rub your hands on the upper parts of your leg to the knee.
