🌟 Time Travelers Expo: Grade 5 Poets Bring Ancient Civilizations to Life!

Our Grade 5 historians—the “Time Travellers”—recently concluded their interdisciplinary PBL project, “Discovering Ancient Civilisations,” with a highly successful Expo. To creatively synthesise their in-depth knowledge of the Greek, Roman, and Gandhara civilisations, students crafted Haiku poems. They captured them in digital images as part of their final individual products.

A Creative Culmination

The project challenged students to take on the role of historians and explore the lives, cultures, and contributions of these ancient societies. As part of the English curriculum component, students were tasked with poetry writing, where they used poetic devices to reflect on a civilisation’s story.

These Haikus served as a powerful, yet concise, way for students to demonstrate their historical thinking and creative expression. The accompanying digital images transformed their poetic insights into visually engaging artwork, reflecting the Art & Visual Arts learning goal to execute sophisticated artistic works.

🏛 What They Learned:

The digital Haikus often captured:

  • Key aspects of daily life and culture they studied during the “Build Knowledge” phase.
  • Insights into the rise and fall of their selected civilisation, which they analysed using the Five Whys strategy.
  • Lessons learned from history align with the project’s individual written argument deliverable.

The resulting digital artworks were an integral, visually compelling part of their “Time Travellers Expo” booths, where the students shared their knowledge with families, educators, and community members.

We are incredibly proud of our students for their collaborative spirit, thorough research, and impressive creativity in bringing these civilisations to life!
