Smog in Punjab: A Growing Problem By: Farhan Qadeer

Punjab, known as the “breadbasket of Pakistan,” is facing a serious environmental issue “smog”. Smog is a mix of air pollutants that harms people’s health, affects farming, and reduces the quality of life. This problem becomes worse during winter when pollution levels rise.

What is Smog?

Smog happens when sunlight reacts with pollutants like nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These pollutants come from vehicles, factories, and burning crop residue. In Punjab, smog is made worse by stubble burning (a common farming practice).

Why Does Smog Happen in Punjab?

  1. Stubble Burning: Punjab’s farmers grow a lot of rice and wheat. After harvesting, they burn leftover crop stubble to prepare fields for the next planting. Due to this many harmful gases like carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and fine particles into the air.
  2. Vehicles on the Road: More cars and trucks mean more pollution. These vehicles release gases that help form smog.
  3. Factories and Power Plants: Industries and power plants emit harmful pollutants like sulfur dioxide (SO2) and fine particles.
  4. Dust from Construction: With more buildings being constructed, dust adds to air pollution.
  5. Winter Weather: During winter, low wind speeds and temperature inversions trap pollution close to the ground, making smog worse.

How Does Smog Affect Us?

  1. Health Problems:
  •  Breathing issues
  •  Heart problems
  • Irritation
  1. Damage to Crops:
  • Smog blocks sunlight, which plants need to grow. This reduces crop yields.
  1. Economic Losses:
  • People spend more on healthcare due to pollution-related illnesses.
  • Transportation delays and accidents happen because of poor visibility.
  1. Environmental Harm:
  • Pollutants in smog can lead to acid rain, which harms soil, water, and wildlife.

What is being done about Smog?

  1. Government Steps:
  • Helping Farmers
  • Pollution Control Plans
  • Promoting Clean Energy
  1. New Technology:
  • Machines called bio-decomposers turn stubble into compost instead of smoke.
  • Air purifiers and smog towers are being used in cities to clean the air.
  1. Spreading Awareness:
  • People are being educated about how smog harms health and the environment. Farmers are learning about better farming practices.

What Can Be Done?

Fixing Punjab’s smog problem needs teamwork. Governments, scientists, and the public must all work together. Farmers need better options than stubble burning. Industries and vehicles should follow stricter pollution rules. Most importantly, people need to understand how their actions affect the environment.

Reducing smog is about more than just cleaner air. It’s about protecting the health, farms, and future of Punjab. Taking action now can stop this crisis from getting worse.
