Our children are growing up in an environment that is fast-paced, technology-driven, and constantly influenced by peers, media, and society. They are smart, observant, and often question the very rules and traditions we grew up following. As a mother of five and an early years educator, I know firsthand that parenting can feel both rewarding and overwhelming at the same time.

What I’ve learned over the years is that parenting is less about controlling and more about connecting. My love for my kids pushes me to spend quality time with them—playing, listening, and learning alongside them. It’s in those little moments that trust is built. Patience, kindness, humility, and a positive mindset often work far better than frustration or punishment.

Here are some practical tips that have helped me, and I hope they can guide you as well.

Stay Calm, Not Harsh

Children naturally test boundaries, and our first instinct may be to react with anger. But harshness only shuts them down. When you respond calmly, you create a safe space for communication. Remember: calm parents raise calm children.

Listen First

Every child wants to feel heard. Sometimes their “tantrum” is just a way of saying, “Notice me, understand me.” Listening doesn’t mean you agree, but it shows respect. When children know their voice matters, they trust you more.

Set Clear Boundaries

Rules are important, but kids respond better when they understand why a rule exists. Instead of “Because I said so,” explain, “We don’t play with sharp objects because they can hurt you.” Rules with reasons foster cooperation instead of rebellion.

Be Consistent

Children thrive on routine and consistency. If you say no today and yes tomorrow for the same thing, it confuses them. Sticking to your word, whether it’s about bedtime, screen time, or rewards, helps them feel secure and builds respect.

Praise Efforts, Not Just Results

Children light up when their effort is acknowledged. Instead of only celebrating the “A” on a test, say, “I’m proud of how hard you worked.” This teaches them that persistence and resilience are more valuable than perfection.

Limit Screens, Encourage Activities

Technology is everywhere, and while it has its benefits, too much of it robs kids of creativity and focus. Encourage reading, outdoor play, art, or even simple family games. These experiences build stronger bonds and healthier habits.

Lead by Example

Children learn far more from what they see than what they hear. If we preach patience but lose our temper, they notice. Show kindness, gratitude, and respect in daily life—you’ll see the same reflected in them.

Parenting today isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about walking the journey alongside your child. Every day brings new challenges, but it also brings opportunities to grow together. If we focus on connection over control, and on guidance over punishment, we’ll not only raise responsible children—we’ll raise confident, compassionate human beings.

Smart Parenting Tips for Today’s Tough Kids Written by Sara Tamjeed Parenting in today’s world is not what it used… Continue reading Smart Parenting Tips for Today’s Tough Kids – Written by Sara Tamjeed

[2

post-81","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-from-the-classroom-to-the-blogosphere","entry
["GET
