It formed about 4.6 billion years ago from a giant cloud of gas and dust called a nebula. Over time, gravity pulled this material together to form the Sun and the planets. The Solar System includes the Sun, eight planets, their moons, dwarf planets, asteroids, and comets. All these objects move around the Sun because of its strong gravitational pull.

At the center of the Solar System is the Sun. It contains about 99.8% of the mass of the entire Solar System and is made mostly of hydrogen and helium gases. The Sun produces huge amounts of light and heat, which are essential for life on Earth. Its gravity keeps all the planets moving in their orbits around it.

The eight planets are divided into two main groups. The first group is the rocky or terrestrial planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. These planets have solid surfaces made of rock and metal. Earth is special because it supports life, with liquid water and a suitable atmosphere. Mars is known as the “Red Planet” because its surface contains iron oxide, giving it a reddish color, and scientists study it to learn if life once existed there.

The outer planets are the gas and ice giants: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. These planets are much larger and mostly made of gases and icy materials. Jupiter is the biggest planet and has a huge storm called the Great Red Spot. Saturn is famous for its beautiful rings made of ice and rock. Uranus rotates on its side, while Neptune is known for its strong winds and deep blue color.

Amna Adnan, V-D The Solar System is one of the most fascinating parts of the universe.
