The culmination of the Project-Based Learning (PBL) unit for Pre-Nursery students at Beaconhouse Johar Town Junior was a vibrant and sensory-rich event titled “All About Me.” The project encouraged students to explore and express their own identities, guided by the driving question: “Who am I?” This engaging experience allowed students to celebrate themselves while sharing their learning journey with teachers and peers.
Expressing Self Through Portraits
Students began by presenting their self-portraits, proudly identifying and explaining features such as “These are my eyes, this is my nose, and this is my mouth.” This activity helped students develop self-awareness and language skills while reinforcing the concept of individuality.
Sensory Exploration
To bring the theme of “All About Me” to life, five tables were set up for the five senses, each filled with sensory-rich materials and activities. Students explored each sense and shared their learning in a hands-on and interactive way.
- Sense of Hearing: At this table, students explored drums and musical instruments. They excitedly explained that we hear with our ears and demonstrated different sounds they could make, showing how listening helps us understand the world around us.
- Sense of Taste: Students tasted various items such as cookies and chips, identifying flavours and describing them as sweet or salty. This activity helped them connect their sense of taste to everyday experiences.
- Sense of Touch: Different textures and materials were provided for students to feel. They described objects as soft, hard, rough, or smooth, learning to express how their hands can explore and understand the environment.
- Sense of Sight: Using colourful objects and pictures, students talked about how we see with our eyes. They shared examples of things they could see around them, reinforcing their understanding of vision as a sense.
- Sense of Smell: Students explored different scents, smelling perfume and flowers, which they described as good, and socks and garbage, which they described as bad. This activity helped them understand how smell affects perception and experience.
Learning Through Body Parts
Two additional tables were dedicated to arranging body parts, where students actively placed and identified each part, explaining, “This is my hand, this is my leg,” and so on. This interactive activity strengthened their understanding of anatomy in a fun and engaging way.
A Celebration of Discovery
The PBL Culmination event was not only an opportunity for students to showcase their learning but also a joyful celebration of curiosity, creativity, and self-expression. Teachers, peers, and families witnessed the students’ confidence and excitement as they shared their knowledge and discoveries.
At Beaconhouse Johar Town Junior, Project-Based Learning encourages young learners to explore, question, and express themselves, building a foundation of curiosity and confidence that lasts a lifetime.
