A Vibrant Display: Beaconhouse Johar Town Junior Nursery “Rainbow of Feelings” PBL Culmination

The culmination of the Project-Based Learning (PBL) unit for Nursery Level at Beaconhouse Johar Town Junior was a spectacular, sensory-rich event titled “A Rainbow of Feelings.” This was not just a display; it was a deep, hands-on dive into emotional literacy, where our youngest students showcased their understanding that feelings come in many colours and that all feelings are okay.

Hands-On Emotional Intelligence: The Display Corners

The Nursery level classrooms were transformed into a gallery of emotional discovery, highlighting various techniques the children learned for understanding and managing their inner world:

  • The Calm Corner: This essential space was dedicated to self-regulation. Visitors learned that students use this area to take deep breaths and relax, demonstrating a practical understanding of managing big emotions.
  • Mood Books & Drawings: The display showed how children track and express their internal worlds using Mood Books to record daily feelings and through colourful drawings of emotions. Drawing proved to be a key tool for communicating feelings that might be difficult to articulate verbally.
  • Feelings Through Music: This station highlighted the powerful connection between sound and emotion, showing how listening to different types of music can evoke different emotional responses.
  • Happiness Poster: A collective art piece was proudly displayed, featuring drawings of the things that make the children happiest.

The Power of Play and Craft

The exhibition truly shone through the artistic and imaginative elements, proving that emotional learning can be incredibly fun and creative:

  • Feeling Monsters & Pebble Art: These creative pieces were a clear highlight. The students created their own Feeling Monsters, with each monster representing a different emotion. This activity allowed the children to externalise and understand complex feelings by making them tangible.
  • Colour-Emotion Connection: Students showcased their grasp of emotional symbolism, demonstrating how different colours are consciously matched with different feelings.
  • Practising Expressions: Through the “Feelings in the Mirror” activity, children demonstrated self-awareness by practising and identifying happy, sad, angry, and calm facial expressions.
  • Digital Literacy: The integration of technology was also featured, showing how the class worked on matching emojis with the correct feelings using a tablet

Engaging the Senses: The Sensory Stations

A key component of this PBL unit was connecting feelings to our five senses, which are fundamental to how we perceive and react to the world. The children guided visitors through a rich sensory experience at different dedicated stations:

  • Sight Station: Focused on using the eyes to see and distinguish between different colours and pictures.
  • Hearing Station: Dedicated to using ears to listen to and recognise different sounds.
  • Smell Station: Focused on using the nose to experience both nice and strong smells.
  • Touch Station: Allowed children to use their hands to feel and describe different textures like soft, hard, rough, and smooth.

This comprehensive approach showed that learning about emotions involves the whole body and all our senses.

Congratulations to the students of Nursery and their dedicated teachers at Beaconhouse Johar Town Junior for a truly exemplary PBL Culmination Day. They have been equipped with a foundation of emotional literacy that will help them navigate the world with confidence and kindness.
