Exploring Sounds: Celebrating the /s/ and /a/ Sounds at Beaconhouse Junior Campus, Johar Town

Early literacy is a journey of discovery, where children begin to connect letters with sounds and sounds with meaning. At Beaconhouse Junior Campus Johar Town, we believe in making this process joyful and memorable. To strengthen our young learners’ phonics skills, we organised an exciting celebration of the /s/ and /a/ sounds in the beautifully decorated school backyard. The area was transformed into a lively learning space with four engaging activity corners, each designed to reinforce sound recognition through play and creativity.

Tracing in the Salt Tray:

At the first table, children explored the salt tray activity where they traced and practised writing the letters ‘a’ and ‘s’ with their fingers. This hands-on activity allowed students to strengthen their fine motor skills while building a deeper connection between the letter shape and its sound.

Sandwich-Making Fun:

The second table was a favourite among many—the sandwich-making station. Here, children prepared their own sandwiches, carefully layering ingredients while happily repeating the /s/ sound. The experience not only reinforced sound recognition but also introduced them to practical life skills in a fun and delicious way.

Vocabulary Hunt Adventure:

The third table featured a lively vocabulary hunt. Large letters ‘A’ and ‘S’ were displayed on the table, alongside baskets filled with word cards and pictures. Children eagerly sorted the vocabulary items, placing them under the correct sound. This engaging task encouraged quick thinking, sound recognition, and vocabulary building.

Painting with Sounds:

The fourth activity corner brought out the artists in our young learners. With printouts of objects beginning with children, they enjoyed colouring and painting, making learning both visual and creative. This activity added a colourful touch to phonics practice, allowing students to connect sounds with familiar objects in an enjoyable way.

A Joyful Learning Experience:

The /s/ and /a/ sound celebration was more than just a phonics activity—it was a day filled with exploration, creativity, and hands-on learning. By engaging multiple senses and using interactive activities, our students not only practised early literacy skills but also developed confidence and joy in their learning journey.

At Beaconhouse Junior Campus Johar Town, we are committed to making every step of literacy meaningful, exciting, and memorable for our young learners.
