“Play is the foundation of learning, creativity, self-expression, and constructive problem-solving. It’s how children wrestle with life to make it meaningful.”

Susan Linn (psychiatrist)

‘Playing shop’ is a great activity where children completely got engaged and along with the element of having fun, they are also learning a whole host of skills like; Planning skills, Thinking/reasoning & Problem solving, Mathematical concepts, The concept of money, Creativity and imagination, Entrepreneurial skills and Social skills.

Learning about money and developing financial literacy from a young age can help children develop responsible money habits and attitudes for later in life.

Students of Class 1, got engaged in playing shop activity in which they pretended like customers and shop keepers. Students were provided with especially designed area depicting a shop scenario, which heightened their interest toward the activity. Different items were displayed with price tags. Students used fake money to purchase items from the shop.

The activity enhanced their mathematical understanding of addition and subtraction. The activity also allowed them to explore the concept of ‘exchanging items’ with each other.

Students purchased pencils and sharpeners from each other which later were given to them as an incentive for extrinsic motivation. The lesson was integrated with their PSHE lesson in which they had to learn about patience and taking turns by showing discipline while standing in a line patiently and waiting for their turn. Later they wrote a recount on ‘Playing Shop’ activity in their English lesson.
