Co-Teaching in Action: Exploring Food Tests in Biology
A dynamic co-teaching session took place in Class XM (Biology) at BCLR, led by IC Ms. Shazia Yousaf in collaboration with Sir Waqas. The lesson, focused on Food Tests, brought science to life by combining hands-on laboratory work with effective Assessment for Learning (AfL) strategies.
The session began with a clear explanation of the learning objectives, followed by a brief discussion revisiting theoretical concepts about nutrients and their role in living organisms. Students then headed to the biology lab, where excitement filled the air as they conducted a series of food tests to identify the presence of starch, proteins, fats, and sugars in different food samples.
The lesson stood out for its strong focus on active learning. Through thought-provoking questions, peer assessments, and exit slips, students were continuously encouraged to think critically, reflect on their findings, and evaluate their understanding. This seamless integration of AfL techniques ensured that every learner remained engaged and confident throughout the process.
The co-teaching model proved to be an enriching experience for both students and teachers. With two facilitators guiding and supporting learning, the session fostered collaboration, curiosity, and deeper comprehension of biological concepts. It was a perfect example of how teamwork in teaching can transform an ordinary lesson into an extraordinary learning experience.
