“Miss, can we read for five more minutes?”
When I hear those words, I know something magical is happening.
As a teacher, I believe reading isn’t just a skill—it’s a doorway to imagination, empathy, and endless learning. But let’s be honest: not every student walks into the classroom already loving books. That’s where the real adventure begins.
🌟 Choice is Power
I give students the freedom to choose—whether it’s a thrilling mystery, a laugh-out-loud comic, a thought-provoking biography, or even a quirky joke book. We have a classroom bookshelf that feels like a treasure chest, and students love “book-hunting” for their next read. When they feel ownership, curiosity takes the driver’s seat, and suddenly a book becomes a friend, not homework.
🤝 Reading is Social
We hold “book cafés” where students sip hot chocolate while sharing book recommendations, create cozy reading corners with beanbags and fairy lights, and even host “book speed dating” sessions to sample multiple titles in minutes. Reading becomes a community event, filled with laughter, discussion, and discovery.
📚 Model the Joy
I read alongside my students, sometimes pausing to say, “Oh! I didn’t see that twist coming!” I talk about my favorite childhood books and the ones that still make me cry or laugh today. When a fresh batch of books arrives, I make a mini “book unboxing ceremony” so they feel the excitement with me. Passion is contagious—and they catch it.
🎭 Celebrate, Don’t Just Assess
When a student finishes a book, it’s a high-five moment, not a pop quiz. We create book trailers, act out scenes in mini-theatre performances, or design alternate endings. These celebrations make reading an accomplishment to be proud of, not a task to be graded.
💻 Use Technology Smartly
We explore digital audiobooks, interactive e-books, and online reading challenges that connect students with young readers from around the world. With these tools, reading becomes more accessible, interactive, and tailored to different learning styles.
Reading isn’t just about decoding words—it’s about finding yourself in a character’s journey, walking in someone else’s shoes, and unlocking doors to worlds you never knew existed.
And the best part? Once a child falls in love with reading, they carry that love for life—and every “Miss, can we read for five more minutes?” tells me we’re on the right path.
