Educating young people about substance abuse is not about creating fear; it is about giving them the knowledge and confidence to make safe, responsible choices.

Recognising the importance of addressing these topics early, the Grade 6 students at Beaconhouse Jauhar Primary Campus (JPC) took center stage to conduct an interactive and impactful Drug Awareness Morning Assembly. Through thoughtful analogies, live roleplays, and audience participation, JPC students and staff came together for a truly inspiring cause.

Starting with Gratitude and Mindful Choices

The assembly opened solemnly with a recitation of Surah Ad-Duha and its translation. Following this, the student hosts invited the entire school to participate in a quick “60-Second Health Check-In.” Students were asked to stand up if they had slept at least 8 hours, drank a full glass of water, or eaten breakfast that morning.

The hosts tied this simple activity back to the day’s theme: taking care of basic everyday needs builds personal strength. Every healthy choice we make puts the steering wheel of our lives firmly in our own hands.

The Brain: A Ferrari Under Construction

To help their peers understand how drugs affect the brain, student presenters introduced a memorable comparison: Imagine being handed the keys to a brand-new Ferrari, but the brakes aren’t properly installed!

They explained that a Grade 6 student’s brain is growing rapidly—it has high speed and power, but its “brakes” (self-control and decision-making) are still under construction. Presenters further explained how harmful substances trick the brain’s reward system, cut the “brake lines” of self-control, and lock in bad habits.

Master the Script: The STARS Strategy

To stand up against peer pressure, students need an actionable plan. The Grade 6 team introduced the STARS strategy:

S – State: State your position clearly and confidently.

T – Tell: Tell a quick reason for your refusal.

A – Alternative: Suggest a safe alternative activity.

R – Revert: Revert the pressure back by asking why they are insisting.

S – Step Away: Step away safely if the other person won’t respect your boundary.

Bringing STARS to Life: The Live Roleplay

Rather than giving a simple lecture, Grade 6 students brought the STARS strategy to life through an interactive live roleplay.

Student actors and presenters enacted a realistic scene on the school bleachers where one student was pressured by a peer to try a vape. At each critical moment, the actors froze, allowing the audience to guess which STARS move was being demonstrated:

State: The student clearly stated, “Nah, I’m good.”

Tell: He gave a reason: “No thanks, I’ve got track practice after school and I need my lungs.”

Alternative: He suggested an alternative: “Man, let’s just head to the gym and see who’s shooting hoops…”

Revert: When pressured further, he reverted the question: “Why are you so obsessed with getting me to use your vape anyway?”

Step Away: Finally, when the peer hesitated, the student stepped away: “Catch you later, man.”

A student presenter then led the entire assembly in an energetic memory check chant, cementing the five steps in everyone’s minds.

The interactive experience didn’t end with the roleplay. Presenters provided the audience with a real-life reflection scenario involving a student being pressured by friends. The audience actively applied each step of the STARS framework to help solve the situation safely.

In addition to the assembly presentations, students created vibrant awareness posters displayed across notice boards and school grounds, ensuring the message reached every corner of the campus.

A Shared Commitment at JPC

In their concluding remarks, student hosts reminded their peers: “Your brain is a high-performance machine under construction. Protecting your journey is a sign of strength and self-respect.”

Teachers, the Principal, and the Senior Leadership Team praised the Grade 6 students for handling such a vital topic with immense maturity, creativity, and leadership. Special thanks were extended to Ms. Umra (Student Counsellor) and Ms. Aelia for guiding and supporting the students throughout this initiative.

At Beaconhouse Jauhar Primary Campus, this initiative proved that when students take the lead, awareness transforms into positive action. Knowing when to say “no” and supporting others to do the same, is a lesson that will stay with our students for life.

Some conversations are difficult to begin, but they are often the ones that matter most.
