If you have, don’t worry; I used to feel exactly the same way. I was very shy, and the thought of public speaking filled me with fear. It was difficult for me to talk to new people and express my ideas. Today, I would like to share my public speaking journey, a journey that taught me that “every cloud has a silver lining.”

At first, public speaking was one of my greatest fears. Whenever I had to stand in front of my class or a group of people, I would become extremely nervous. My hands would tremble, my heart would race, and sometimes I would forget my words completely. I was always afraid that people would laugh at me if I made a mistake, so I avoided speaking whenever possible.

I completed my Pre-Nursery and Nursery before starting Kindergarten. There, I met a classmate who had lived in Thailand. We became very close friends and spent a lot of time together. We ate lunch together, played together, and shared many happy memories. However, everything changed when I had to switch schools. My heart sank when I found out, and I begged my parents to let me stay, but they explained that the school was too far away. With a heavy heart, I had to say goodbye to my friends and start a new journey at another school. It was very emotional for me because I had finally felt settled and comfortable.

When I joined my new school, I feared that I would go through the same experience again. I thought I would struggle to make friends, feel lonely, and find it hard to adjust. It felt like I was starting all over again. However, something unexpected happened that changed my life.

From the very first day, my teacher welcomed me with kindness and treated every student with respect. Whenever I had difficulty understanding something, she patiently explained it to me without making me feel embarrassed. Instead of discouraging me, she always motivated me and believed in my abilities. For the first time, I felt that my voice mattered and that I was capable of doing something meaningful.

Slowly, I began to gain confidence. I started making new friends, participating in class, and enjoying my studies. The fear and loneliness that once surrounded me began to fade away. When I completed Grade 2 and moved to Grade 3, a new chapter of my life began.

In Grade 3, our school organised a debate competition. Although I was still shy, I decided to participate because I wanted to challenge myself. During the audition, I was extremely nervous. My voice shook, my hands trembled, and I struggled to speak clearly. I thought I had performed badly, so I was shocked when I was selected for the final round. Even though I tried my best in the grand finale, I did not win. I felt disappointed and started to doubt myself.

The next year, in Grade 4, the debate competition was held again. This time, I worked harder than ever before. I practised for hours, prepared my speech carefully, and tried to improve my confidence. Once again, I reached the final round, but I still did not win. I felt discouraged and began to think that success might never come to me. But deep inside, I realised that every failure was teaching me something valuable and making me stronger.

In Grade 5, the debate competition returned once more. This time, I gave it my absolute best. I practised continuously and worked on my mistakes. Before the competition, I asked my mother if I would win. She replied, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” I kept those words in my heart as motivation.

On the day of the final, I was nervous but determined. When my turn came, I spoke with confidence and gave my best performance. After all the speeches were over, the results were announced: “The winner of the debate competition is SYED MUSA ALI!” I was filled with joy and disbelief. All my hard work had finally paid off.

That moment taught me an important lesson: success does not come overnight. It comes through hard work, patience, and never giving up. As the saying goes, “Practice makes perfect,” and “Rome wasn’t built in a day.”

Moral of my story: Never give up on your dreams.
