Space has always captured human curiosity; the swirling galaxies, the glowing Moon, the secrets hidden beyond Earth’s atmosphere. This sense of wonder became the driving force behind the Grade 5 Project-Based Learning (PBL) at Beaconhouse Jauhar Primary Campus, where students embarked on an exciting journey to uncover the mysteries of our sky! Under the guidance of their Science teachers, our young researchers transformed into “Cosmic Investigators!” exploring questions that scientists have asked for centuries!
A Driving Question That Sparked Curiosity
The PBL journey was rooted in a powerful driving question: “How can we, as a team of cosmic investigators, use scientific observation to solve mysteries of our sky and explore the new secrets we have yet to discover?”

This question guided every activity, discussion, and presentation; pushing students to think critically, observe deeply and make meaningful connections across subjects.
What Our Young Scientists Explored
Across three immersive weeks, students investigated essential scientific concepts:
🌙 Observing the Moon: Students maintained a 14-day Moon Diary, capturing photographs at the same time each night and noting how its appearance changed! This helped them understand the real reason behind the Moon’s phases, a concept later reinforced through their skit performances in the culmination event.
🌍 Understanding Gravity, Tides & Planet Formation: Through classroom discussions and videos, students explored how gravity shapes the universe, pulls dust and gas together to form planets and causes powerful ocean tides on Earth. To present their learning creatively, they used digital tools like Animoto, Canva, Flipgrid, and Google Vidz to produce engaging videos!
🎨 Painting the Sky Through Art: Inspired by Chesley Bonestell, the “Father of Space Art,” students created stunning celestial paintings that represented eclipses, sky patterns and cosmic landscapes. Their artwork became a highlight of the culmination display!

📊 Integrating Math: Students plotted line graphs showing sunrise and sunset timings over a week, observing real patterns in daylight duration.
📝 Exploring Space Through Urdu: Incorporating Urdu into the curriculum, students wrote creative Urdu report writings about space missions, their challenges and how astronauts prepare for them.
🪐 The Sky Unlocked : A Culmination Filled with Science and Creativity! 🪐
The grand event, “The Sky Unlocked”, showcased an impressive series of skits titled “The Celestial Disaster Rehearsal.”
Each Grade 5 class presented a unique “What If…?” scenario exploring what would happen if:
- the Earth stopped spinning? 🌎
- the Moon went on vacation? 🌙
- the Sun suddenly switched off?
- the Moon stopped revolving?
- Eclipses happened every month?

These performances blended humor with scientific accuracy, demonstrating students’ deep understanding of how the Solar System maintains balance.
The finale included an interactive “Mysteries of the Sky” Quiz, where the audience participated using colored traffic-light response cards, turning learning into a lively, collaborative experience!
