Hey guys! Isn’t space cool? You might think it is fun, but it is also very dangerous work indeed. Many accidents have happened in space and many lives have been lost.

Vladimir Komarov, a cosmonaut

PARACHUTE FAILURE OF SOYUZ 1

Vladimir Komarov was a Russian cosmonaut, who was sent upon a mission involving the space vehicle, Soyuz 1. Unfortunately, the mission was a failure, and Vladimir was called back. Upon breaching the atmosphere, however, the Soyuz 1 parachute failed to open and the vehicle was unable to slow down, thereby crashing into Earth, and killing Vladimir Komarov. He has been honored for his bravery with many memorials.

FIRE! FIRE!

Apollo-Saturn 204, which was later called Apollo 1, was burnt to flames when its command module burst and set fire during a pre-launch test, killing all three crewmembers inside.

These are just a few of the many space accidents in the history of astronomy.

Now, let’s move on to the planets.

MERCURY:

Mercury, the smallest planet, and the closest one to the sun. In the day, the temperature can rise up to 750-800°F. At night, the temperature can go down to -330°. This planet has no moons.

VENUS:

Venus is considered the hottest planet, with a temperature that can rise to 847°F. Heat-trapping clouds surround Venus, which causes it to be hotter than Mercury, despite Mercury being closer to the sun.

EARTH:

Being our home, planet Earth has just the right conditions for us to live and evolve. It is not too hot or cold and has oxygen, water, and resources for us to survive.  On Mars, it would be too cold. On Venus, our skin would be melting like chocolate in the sun.

JUPITER:

Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. All the planets can be fitted inside! Jupiter is a gas planet which means it is made of gas. The average temperature is -238° to -166°. We can’t survive on Jupiter, because there are poisonous gases and no air to breath.

SATURN:

Saturn is the 2nd largest planet in the solar system. But it is, without a doubt, the most beautiful planet ever. Its rings circle around it, made of ice, snow, and dust. This planet is also like Jupiter; it’s a gas planet.

URANUS

Uranus is a planet that has 27 moons. It is entirely made of water or ice. The winds swirl around at a rate of 90 to 360 miles per hour. The average temperature is about -353 degrees.

NEPTUNE:

Neptune is the coldest planet and the farthest planet from the sun. Its whole body is a vast ocean. It is also an ice giant. It has a short day and a long year.

Now that you have learned these awesome facts, you are all ready to be an astronaut! And what have I been trying to tell you since the beginning: Isn’t space just cool?
