WHAT DOES ENDANGERED MEAN

Endangered species are organisms whose numbers have plummeted to the point where they will become extinct if not protected. Endangered means a species is seriously at risk of extinction.

When an animal is in danger of becoming extinct through loss of habitat, habitat degradation, overhunting or harvesting, or other reason. When a species is likely to become endangered, it can also be called a threatened species.

 WHAT CAUSES ENDANGERED?

Habitat loss is the primary cause of higher extinction rates, other causes include habitat changes, over-exploitation of wildlife for commercial purposes, the introduction of harmful nonnative species, pollution, and the spread of diseases.

TIGERS

There are only 4500 tigers left in the world.

Tigers have lost an estimation of 95% of their historical range. Their habitat has been destroyed, degraded, and fragmented by human activities.

RED PANDA

Their primary threats are habitat loss and degradation, human interference, and poaching. The total population of red pandas has declined by 40% over the past two decades. There are 10,000 red pandas in the world. It is probable that this decline will continue in the coming years.

Additionally, habitat destruction is causing rhinos to lose their home. Finally, natural disasters and diseases are also threatening the rhino with extinction.

There are a total of 101,500 gorillas left in the world.

Habitat destruction is a problem across their

Central African range. Gorillas are also killed for the bushmeat trade, or accidentally killed or maimed by iron snares.

 CHIMPANZEES

How many chimpanzees are left in the world? There are 170,000 to 300,000 estimated. The main threats to chimpanzees are habitat loss diseases and especially bushmeat. If an adult is killed, it takes 14-15 years to replace him or her as a breeding individual.
