“To be calm is the highest achievement of the self.” (Zen Proverbs)
In this time of distant learning and very limited physical interaction, it is important to keep our mental and physical health intact. As always Beaconhouse finds opportunities amidst challenges and Yoga is one of the ways, we can encourage our students to connect with nature. Furthermore, their body can become more flexible after consistent yoga practice. In addition to that it can help develop a great sense of self-discipline and self-awareness. In short it can improve students’ well-being and provide better mental clarity.
As part of the Beaconhouse learner profile, we prepare our students to be life-long learners and responsible citizens; and taking responsibility of our own body and mind is of utmost importance. Our little kindergarteners were introduced with this ancient art of Yoga that connects the mind and body. Students performed exercises by balancing the elements of their body to meditate and relax. They started with breathing exercises which can help increase their stamina and relax their mind and body. Then the “Standing pose” to bring vitality and balance to the body and strength to the spine. “Lotus pose” to calm the brain, increase awareness and attentiveness and for a good posture. “Back bend” to strengthen back, shoulders, chest and hips. It also increases flexibility. And lastly “Balanced toe pose” for strong, stable and balanced legs. As a whole students had a unique experience.
Instead of allowing our children to indulge in addictive games which not only increase the anxiety level but also is damaging for their vision, we can encourage our children to use yoga as a medium to release stress and anxiety. It can be a brilliant way to channelize the unlimited energy they possess.
