Global Dignity Day!
A world of empathy, inclusivity and acceptance
• What exactly is Global Dignity Day?
Celebrated on the third Wednesday of October, is Global Dignity Day. Global Dignity Day was co-founded by the crown prince Haakon of Norway in 2006 along with John Bryant and Dr Pekka Himanen, their mission was to prove to people, especially to children who will take part in the development of this world, that we all deserve dignity.
Dignity and respect are often used indifferently, but they are two different things that completely change a statement. Dignity is inherent while respect is earned. Dignity is the core of our identity and self-worth as we are born with it and it cannot be taken away from us, on the other hand, respect is given to an individual by their actions, behaviour and achievements. Remembering the dignity that we and everyone else hold helps us break free from negative feelings such as resentment, hatred and the urge to take revenge.
• Why are we losing sight of our dignity?
Dignity knows no social, economic, gender or ethnic barriers, but why is that in this modern era and society, we have forgotten about dignity and never acknowledged it? It is the solutions to our common problems, yet we feign ignorance all because of our unhealthy environment.
Dignity begins with someone, and that someone could be you. If we could make difference to the society by building an environment that includes fairness, freedom, understanding and comfort, the dignity that we still have in our hearts can be recognized.
• Making dignity a part of our lives.
If we to be treated with dignity, then we must take responsibility and treat others with dignity. To make dignity a long-term plan that we must follow, we have to recognize our own internal dignity and acknowledge the fundamental value of others. To do this, we can start off slowly by improving our language and behaviour to being polite and soft spoken. Imagine the difference if you continue that for a week, it makes a huge difference and is worth the effort.
In conclusion, being aware of right and wrongs will definitely guide you to a better path, so do the right thing and achieve a dignified life. Dignity can be spread by people like you.
