The learning process of Squares and Cubes can be smudgy and difficult sometimes. Affectively implemented class activities help to make the learning of squares and cubes easy and fun.

An activity “Shopping Mall” was designed and implemented in Grade-VI. The classroom was converted into a shopping mall. Different stalls were setup in different corners of classroom. Class was divided into four groups and 1 student played the role of a shop keeper on each stall. The shopkeepers did the calculations either they got accurate money from the customers or not. Specific amount of money and shopping list was provided to each group of students.

After receiving the shopping list, students went to the stalls and picked up the item they had to buy. Students looked at the back of the items for price tags.

  • Price tags of items were written as: Price of 1 chocolate= (Price of 1 Apple)2

Example: The students who had to buy chocolate saw the price tag behind the chocolate and moved towards the fruit shop and found price of 1 apple. Then they calculated how much they needed to pay for the chocolate and paid it to the shopkeeper at the grocery shop.

Students used paper currency to pay which was provided by the teacher. Next, each group moved towards next item to buy. Finally, students gathered all items and submitted to the teacher.

Students not only had a great time learning collaboratively but also learned the calculation of squares and cubes with fun.
