A Transformative Week at Karachi Institute of Kidney Disease: My Internship Experience- Ayan Haider

This past week, I had the incredible opportunity to complete a one-week internship at the Karachi Institute of Kidney Disease (KIKD) — an experience that has been both deeply educational and inspiring. Over the course of 30 intensive hours, I was immersed in the world of nephrology, patient care, and hospital operations. Here’s a glimpse into what I learned and experienced.

💡 Learning in Action: A Week of Medical Discovery

From the very first day, I was exposed to a wide array of essential medical practices and patient-care techniques. Some of the key skills and insights I gained include:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS): I was trained in essential life-saving procedures, preparing me to respond effectively in emergency situations.

  • CPR Techniques: I not only learned but also practiced the correct method of performing CPR — a crucial component of BLS.

  • Monitoring Vital Signs: I became proficient in checking blood pressure and blood sugar levels, both fundamental aspects of routine healthcare.

  • Patient Interaction: One of the most impactful parts of the internship was conducting personal interviews with dialysis patients, hearing their stories, and understanding their struggles firsthand.

  • Kidney Health Awareness: I gained valuable insights into kidney diseases, their causes, treatments, and the importance of preventive care.

❤️ Giving Back: More Than Just Learning

Beyond the technical training, I was also given the opportunity to contribute in meaningful ways:

  • Organizing Donations: Assisting in coordinating donations for patients gave me a glimpse into the compassionate side of healthcare — where generosity and medical service go hand in hand.

  • Hospital Tour: A guided tour of the entire hospital allowed me to understand the structure and flow of a medical institution, from emergency rooms to dialysis units.

🌟 A Note of Thanks

I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Karachi Institute of Kidney Disease for welcoming me and offering such a rich learning environment. Every moment spent there added something valuable to my knowledge and character.

This internship has only strengthened my resolve to pursue a career in healthcare — with a renewed focus on empathy, service, and knowledge.

Thank you, KIKD, for this life-changing experience!
