Hi everyone! I’m Hiba Shariq, a student at Beaconhouse Jauhar Campus who, thanks to the encouragement of my career counselor, Sir Sanaullah, got the incredible opportunity to be part of WWF’s Summer Eco Internship Program. Over the course of these weeks I learned, networked, and contributed to sustainability. Here’s how it went!
Learning the Basics: Awareness & Leadership
The internship kicked off with eye-opening videos on major environmental issues and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). What followed was an exciting ice-breaker-12 leaders stepped up to form groups.
Watching interns from different backgrounds come together for one cause-saving the planet-was truly inspiring.
Guest Speakers & Expanding Perspectives
We had incredible speakers, like those from PCF, who showed how every field can contribute to sustainability—not just environmental science! Another highlight was Angel Imdad, CEO of Irverde and a trailblazing woman in eco entrepreneurship. She shared her journey of starting a waste management company in a competitive industry and from pitching her idea with confidence to believing in her vision when few did, it left us all motivated.
Critical Thinking & Networking
One challenge stuck with me-tackling a real world case study: Pakistan’s high apricot production wasted due to unsustainable practices. Brainstorming eco-friendly solutions with my team pushed my critical thinking. We also
learned the art of networking from the Artistic Milliners HR team and through fun role-plays, they taught us how to sell ourselves confidently.
Community Impact: Our Recycling Project
After days of immersive learning it was time to execute our community project! Co leading my team I organized an awareness session at BSS Gulshan campus, in alignment with the WWF SGDs. It was centered on sustainability themes like plantation and recycling and featured interactive discussions on environmental
stewardship, engaging educational videos, hands-on upcycling activities and a competitive quiz to reinforce key concepts. The best part? Giving away eco-friendly goodies like plants and tote bags. Witnessing the participants’ enthusiasm and genuine interest was incredibly rewarding.
Final Thoughts
This internship was more than just learning-it was an opportunity to drive real change. From leadership to entrepreneurship, every session reinforced that sustainability needs all hands on deck. Huge thanks to WWF and Beaconhouse, I’m walking away not only with greater awareness but also with deeper connections and an unwavering commitment to creating a sustainable impact!
