Recently, I traded my grading pens for a passport and took my two favorite tiny humans (my kids) to a country that has been calling my name for years: Turkey.
If you’ve ever traveled with children, you know it’s less of a “vacation” and more of a high-stakes logistical puzzle fueled entirely by snacks. But Istanbul? It absolutely stole our hearts.
History Lessons That Don’t Require Textbooks
Our first stop was the historical heart of Istanbul. Standing inside Hagia Sophia, I looked up at the massive, golden dome and felt that rare, beautiful silence you only get when a place is genuinely awe-inspiring. (It lasted about four seconds before my youngest asked if we could buy ice cream, but hey, I’ll take it).
Right next door, the Blue Mosque was a masterclass in elegance, and wandering through Topkapi Palace made me feel like royalty—right up until I had to carry a tired kid’s backpack.
Teacher Pro-Tip: Want to teach your kids about ancient history without them yawning? Take them to Topkapi and tell them the Sultans used to have secret palace plots. Works every time.
Retail Therapy and Reality Checks
Next up was the Grand Bazaar. Imagine a maze of 4,000 shops filled with glittering lamps, vibrant carpets, and the intoxicating scent of spices. It is a sensory wonderland. It’s also where I learned that my bargaining skills are absolutely pathetic compared to a seasoned Turkish shopkeeper. I went in looking for a simple souvenir and walked out with three mosaic lamps and a box of Turkish Delight the size of a microwave. No regrets.
For a change of pace, we hit İstiklal Street and Taksim Square. Dodging the iconic red nostalgic tram while trying to keep two kids from wandering into a baklava-induced trance was the ultimate test of my maternal reflexes.
________________________________________
Cruising the Bosphorus (And a Theme Park Lifesaver)
One of my absolute favorite memories was the Bosphorus Cruise trip. Feeling the cool sea breeze while gliding between two continents—Europe on one side, Asia on the other—was magical. We waved at the Galata Tower piercing the skyline and spotted Kız Kulesi (the Maiden’s Tower) sitting like a jewel in the water.
Of course, to reward the kids for enduring my love of architecture, we dedicated a day to Vialand. Let’s just say, screaming your lungs out on a roller coaster is excellent stress relief for a working mom.
Final Thoughts from the Teacher’s Desk
From the breathtaking views at the massive Çamlıca Mosque to the peaceful ferry ride to Princess Island (where the lack of cars felt like a vacation in itself), Turkey was a dream.
It’s a place where history isn’t confined to dusty pages; it’s alive on every street corner, in every warm smile from a local, and in every cup of strong Turkish tea. If you’re on the fence about planning that family trip, take it from a tired mom: pack the bags. The laundry can wait; Istanbul is calling.

By Ms.Taskeen Farrukh As a school teacher, my life is governed by bells, lesson plans, and trying to convince that… Continue reading Passports, Pedagogy, and Pigeons: My Whirlwind Turkish Adventure

[1

post-806","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized","entry
["GET
