Last week, our youngest learners traded their storybooks for soap and water as we enthusiastically celebrated Global Handwashing Day! This annual observance is one of the simplest, yet most critical, public health initiatives, and our Early Years students dove right into the action, learning skills that will keep them safe and healthy for life.

The Magic of the 20-Second Scrub
The focus of the day was practical, hands-on learning. Our teachers used fun, interactive methods to ensure the essential steps of handwashing became second nature. We sang catchy songs (often the “Happy Birthday” tune twice!) to teach the crucial 20-second rule and learned the five golden steps: wet, lather, scrub, rinse, and dry.

To make the invisible world of germs visible and engaging, various activities were used, such as using glitter to represent germs, showing how easily they spread, and how quickly soap and water make them disappear! This tactile learning helped students understand the procedure far better than any lecture.

The Power in Our Hands
Beyond the how-to, we held engaging discussions with the children on the importance of handwashing. We talked about all the exciting things their hands do—playing, painting, eating—and why it’s so important to wash away the “germs” afterward, especially before meals and after playing outside or using the restroom.

Teachers also addressed the gentle consequences of not keeping hands clean. These discussions were framed positively—emphasizing that washing hands is our superpower to stay healthy, strong, and ready to play and learn. The children understood that clean hands mean fewer sick days and more fun!

A Clean Commitment
The enthusiasm and focus shown by our Early Years students were truly inspiring. They left the session with not just clean hands, but with a deep understanding of hygiene as a personal commitment to health.
