Amid a calm yet engaging atmosphere, a valuable learning session took place as teachers gathered for the Assessment for Learning (AFL) training. This session was conducted for the teachers of Cluster SO8 along with the Early Years teachers of Early Years Campus, Block 14. It was not just a training, but a chance for teachers to reflect, learn, and grow together.
Assessment for Learning (AFL) is now an important part of effective teaching and learning in the classroom. Instead of focusing only on final results, AFL helps teachers understand where students are in their learning and how they can support them better. It allows teachers to make better decisions and adjust their teaching according to the needs of their students.
During the session, teachers shared ideas and discussed different classroom experiences. One of the most important points highlighted was how AFL involves students in their own learning. Through simple strategies like questioning, peer assessment, and self-reflection, students begin to understand their strengths and areas where they need to improve. This helps build their confidence and makes them more responsible for their own learning.
For Early Years and Key Stage 1, easy and fun techniques like thumbs up/down, talk partners, and visual cues were discussed. These methods help teachers check understanding in a very simple and engaging way, especially for young learners.
Another key focus of the training was effective feedback. Teachers learned how giving clear, timely, and helpful feedback can guide students on what they are doing well and what they need to do next. It helps students focus on learning, not just on getting the right answer.
The session also showed how AFL supports differentiation. Teachers can easily identify learning gaps and support each child according to their level. This creates a positive classroom where mistakes are seen as part of learning, not failure.
Overall, the AFL training was a meaningful and useful experience. It encouraged teachers to make their classrooms more supportive, engaging, and focused on every child’s learning journey.
