Music in the primary years is more than learning songs or rhythms; it is about shaping attitudes, nurturing confidence, and giving children a voice. As we look forward to our music journey, our focus remains on creating joyful, inclusive, and purposeful learning experiences that allow every child to grow musically and personally.
Learner Attitudes and Attributes
One of our key goals is to foster positive learner attitudes towards music. We aim to develop curiosity, enthusiasm, and resilience in our students encouraging them to try, make mistakes, and try again. Through singing, movement, listening, and simple instrument work, learners build confidence, cooperation, and respect for others’ ideas. Music lessons provide a safe space where students learn discipline, patience, and teamwork while celebrating creativity and self-expression.
Encouraging Learner Agency
Learner agency is central to our music classroom. We look forward to giving students more choice and voice in their learning whether it is selecting instruments, creating rhythms, composing simple melodies, or expressing emotions through sound and movement. By allowing children to make decisions, reflect on their performances, and collaborate with peers, we empower them to take ownership of their musical journey. Even at a young age, students learn that their ideas matter.
Our Teaching Approach
As music educators, we continuously reflect on and refine our teaching practices. We aim to move beyond teacher-led instruction towards experiential and student-centered learning, using play-based strategies in lower classes and structured exploration in upper primary. Differentiation remains key ensuring that every learner, regardless of ability, feels included and successful. Technology, body percussion, storytelling, and cross-curricular links will further enrich learning experiences.
Looking Forward
Looking ahead, our vision is to create musically aware learners who are confident performers, thoughtful listeners, and creative thinkers. Music lessons lay the foundation not only for musical skills but also for lifelong attributes such as confidence, collaboration, and emotional expression. By nurturing learner agency and reflecting on our own teaching, we strive to make music a subject that students look forward to one that inspires joy, discipline, and a love for learning.
