To think critically about an issue or a problem means to be open-minded and consider alternative ways of looking at solutions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BUILDING YOUR CHILD&#8217;S CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Building critical thinking skills happens through day-to-day interactions as you talk with your child, ask open-ended questions, and allow your child to experiment and solve problems. Critical thinking is a learned ability that must be taught.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some tips and ideas to help children build a foundation for critical thinking:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brighthorizons.com\/family-resources\/the-importance-of-play\"><strong>Provide opportunities for play<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0Building with blocks, acting out roles with friends, or playing board games all build children\u2019s critical thinking.<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>Don&#8217;t intervene immediately<\/u><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0 Kids need challenges to grow. Wait and watch before you jump in to solve a problem.<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>Ask open-ended questions<\/u><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0Rather than automatically giving answers to the questions your child raises, help them think critically by asking questions in return: &#8220;What ideas do you have? What do you think is happening here?&#8221; Respect their responses whether you view them as correct or not. You could say, &#8220;That is interesting. Tell me why you think that.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Ask why<\/u>:\u00a0<\/strong>get them to provide justification, explanation, purpose or motivation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><u>Ask for clarification<\/u><\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>Can you say what you mean by this.<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>Ask for more<\/u><\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>Can you say more about that<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>Ask for an example or counter-exam<\/u><\/strong><strong>ple: <\/strong>Can you give me an example?<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>Ask for conditi<\/u><\/strong><strong>ons: <\/strong>Can you say what it would depend on?\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is critical thinking?
