At Beaconhouse Elementary Campus PECHS, we believe that fostering a love for nature and environmental awareness starts with our educators. On January 26, 2025, a seed sowing activity was organized, designed to not only connect them with nature but also equip them with engaging, hands-on learning experiences to bring back to their classrooms. In the midst of busy schedules, our teachers often find themselves immersed in paperwork and lesson planning. This activity provided a welcome opportunity to step outside, breathe in the fresh air, and reconnect with the natural world. It was a chance for them to de-stress, recharge, and appreciate the beauty and simplicity of nature.
The seed sowing activity wasn’t just about relaxation; it was also a valuable professional development opportunity. Teachers learned about different seed types, soil preparation, and the germination process. They experienced firsthand the joy of planting a seed and nurturing its growth, gaining a deeper understanding of the concepts they teach in the classroom. For this activity teachers used the title page of the BSS calendar which was creatively prepared by recycled paper with seeds infused with it . Teachers prepared the soil, tore the paper in small pieces to put it inside the soil. Later, they covered the paper with more soil. Finally, they all watered their plant and placed it under the sun to grow. The activity fostered a collaborative environment, with teachers sharing ideas and brainstorming ways to incorporate seed sowing and gardening into their lessons. They discussed curriculum connections, potential classroom projects, and how to engage students in hands-on learning experiences.
This activity empowered our teachers to bring nature into their classrooms in a meaningful way. They left with not only a deeper understanding of plants and the environment but also with the inspiration and practical knowledge to create engaging and educational experiences for their students. We are incredibly grateful to the Head Office for their thoughtful sustainability initiative of sending seed papers along with calendars! This meaningful effort is our way of celebrating 50 years of Beaconhouse while contributing to a greener, more sustainable future. Together, we’re making a difference, one seed at a time!
