Near the end of academic year 2024-25, our professional development journey took a meaningful turn as we delved into the powerful connection between Music and Mindfulness. Originally led by Senior Manager Curriculum – Music, this enriching training session was first attended by the School Coordinator and Music Teacher of BECP. It was later thoughtfully cascaded to the entire teaching faculty of BECP on May 16, 2025.
The session began with a calming mindfulness exercise where teachers were invited to close their eyes, breathe deeply, and listen to soothing instrumental music. This moment of stillness created a peaceful and reflective environment, highlighting how music can serve as a powerful tool to improve focus, reduce stress, and promote inner calm.
One of the most engaging activities involved free-drawing—participants simply let their creativity flow, sketching whatever came to mind as they listened to the music. It wasn’t about artistic talent, but rather about allowing sound to guide expression. Interestingly, most of the drawings featured natural elements like trees, rivers, and landscapes. This collective response beautifully demonstrated how music—like nature—has an innate ability to ground us and evoke a deep sense of connection and harmony.
The session also included interactive discussions and hands-on activities that emphasized the relevance of music across the curriculum. Teachers explored how integrating music into different subject areas can enhance learning experiences, stimulate creativity, and support emotional well-being.
The overwhelming participation and positive feedback from the faculty underscored the lasting impact of the session. It served as a powerful reminder that some of the most effective tools for teaching, healing, and connecting lie in the universal language of music.
