My Journey as a School Librarian

For nearly nineteen years, I have worked as a school librarian, and this journey has been filled with learning, growth, and unforgettable experiences. During these years, I have had the privilege of guiding children, helping them develop reading habits, and witnessing the positive impact that books can have on their lives.

When I began my career, the library was primarily a place for books and printed resources. However, over the years, I have witnessed remarkable changes in education and library services. One of the most memorable milestones was seeing Beaconhouse complete its 50 years of educational excellence. During this period, I also witnessed the transformation of the traditional library into a Library Learning Resource Center (LLRC). This change reflected a modern approach to learning, where education is no longer limited to printed books alone.

Today, learning takes place through a variety of resources, including digital platforms, educational websites, multimedia tools, interactive activities, and technology-based learning materials. The modern library has become a dynamic learning environment where students can explore knowledge through both traditional and digital means.

In recent years, electronic devices and mobile games have become a major part of children’s lives. While many people view technology as a distraction, I believe it can also be used as a powerful educational tool. Not every child develops an interest in reading books in the same way. Some children learn better through visual content, interactive games, research activities, and digital resources. Educational games can improve problem-solving skills, creativity, critical thinking, and technological awareness.

As a librarian and an educator, my message for the parents is to guide children toward meaningful and productive use of technology. Reading does not always begin with a printed book. A child’s learning journey may start with an educational game, a digital story, an online research project, or an interactive learning activity. These tools can gradually develop curiosity and encourage children to become independent learners.

Throughout my career, I have learned that every child learns differently. Some children become passionate readers, while others discover knowledge through technology, exploration, and hands-on learning experiences. The goal is not simply to make every child read books but to help every child develop a love for learning.

Looking back on these nineteen years, I feel proud to have witnessed the evolution of libraries from traditional book-centered spaces to modern learning resource centers. This journey has strengthened my belief that whether through books, digital resources, research, or educational games, learning has the power to transform lives and prepare children for the future.
