At Beaconhouse Elementary Campus Block 3, PECHS, leadership development is woven into daily learning. As an English teacher, I have come to believe that one of the most powerful leadership skills we can nurture in young learners is the ability to listen with empathy and intention.
Habit 5 : \u201cSeek first to understand, then to be understood\u201d \u2014 serves as a guiding principle in my classroom. In English lessons, where communication is central, I intentionally model active listening. I encourage students to respect diverse opinions, explain their thinking clearly, and respond thoughtfully rather than react quickly.
Through structured discussions, reflective questioning, and conflict-resolution strategies, students learn that listening is not passive, it is purposeful. When children feel heard, their confidence grows. They participate more actively, express themselves more clearly, and collaborate more effectively.
By practicing this habit daily, we are not only strengthening language skills but also shaping empathetic, confident, and responsible future leaders.
