English Is So Much More Than Grammar and Textbooks

As a Grade 4 and 5 English teacher, I often hear, “When are we going to learn grammar?” My answer is simple: Every day, but English is so much more than grammar.
One of my favourite classroom moments is when a student excitedly says, “Can I read my story aloud?” or confidently defends an opinion during a class discussion. In those moments, they aren’t thinking about verbs or commas, they’re using language to express themselves, connect with others, and make their voices heard.
English is a gateway to communication, creativity, and critical thinking. Grammar provides the foundation, but stories, discussions, debates, and purposeful writing transform language into a powerful life skill.
At Beaconhouse School system Elementary Campus Block 3 PECHS, we encourage students to read with curiosity, write with purpose, speak with confidence, and listen with empathy. Grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension are essential, but their true value lies in helping students create, collaborate, and communicate in meaningful ways.
Because at the end of the day, English isn’t just about getting the grammar right, it’s about giving every child the confidence to share their story with the world.
