A new school year began which meant it was time for student council elections. Students from diploma programmes 1 and 2 were able to run for positions of their choice in the student council. At Beaconhouse we allow the students to lead their events and fellow classmates forward through their two years. The house captains from diploma programme 2 had already been elected after their own interviews and election prior to the school opening. It was time for all the other slots of responsibility to be filled.
The process started at the end of September where people who were interested were given an application form to fill in. After collecting all the names these students were given a sample test in which their thought processes behind dealing with different potential problems was judged. At the beginning of October, we then took panel interviews of each candidate with a variety of teachers carrying out the interviews. This narrowed down the candidate list to the few who would pass on to the next stage.
Campaigning and speeches were carried out a few days later where shortlisted candidates were given the opportunity to campaign in front of an audience of teachers and students in our auditorium. Elections took place on October 6th. All students from the international baccalaureate section were able to vote for who they wanted in each different position available. Voting took place in the main hall with every voter having their privacy when casting their vote. The same day the results of the elected student council members were announced on the Beaconhouse PECHS Instagram page. Finally to end off the elections the oath-taking ceremony took place where each member of the student council received their gowns and took an oath to take care of their responsibilities with integrity.
