Empowering confident communicators through Literacy Week!

Beaconhouse School System Lower Primary recently celebrated Literacy Week in Lower Primary (Grade 1-2) with great enthusiasm, focusing on the four essential strands of literacy: Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. Each day was filled with exciting activities that helped our young learners strengthen their skills while enjoying the joy of language.

Day 1 – Speaking Strand
The week began with a burst of creativity and confidence. Grade 1 students took part in the “Once Upon a Costume” activity, where they dressed up as their favorite book characters and spoke about them with pride. Meanwhile, Grade 2 students shared about their favorite professions in “Show, Tell & Inspire”, showcasing their speaking skills through engaging presentations.

Day 2 – Listening Strand
Listening skills were the focus on the second day. Grade 1 students enjoyed a lively storytelling session in the library i.e. Giggles and Tales”, where they listened attentively and immersed themselves in imaginative tales. Grade 2 students also participated in a “Story Puzzle Time”, after which they demonstrated their understanding by completing comprehension worksheets.

 

Day 3 – Reading Strand
The third day was all about reading with fun and challenges. Grade 1 students went on a “Phoneme Quest”, identifying correct digraphs in words and sorting them accurately. Grade 2 students took part in a “Reading Spotlight” enhancing their reading with their reading buddies.

Day 4 – Writing Strand
Writing took center stage on Day 4. Grade 1 students engaged in creative picture description in “Tales from Tiny Pens”, choosing their own favorite scenarios and using imaginative vocabulary to express their ideas. Grade 2 students practiced story writing in “The Writing Playground”, completing stories based on prompts with originality and flair.

Day 5 – Word Games
The final day of Literacy Week brought excitement through word games. Grade 1 students played “Word Dominoes” and made word chains, while Grade 2 students enjoyed the classic game of Scrabble in a “Battle of Words”, enhancing their vocabulary in a playful way.

Literacy Festival Culmination
The week concluded with a vibrant Literacy Festival, where parents joined the celebration. They participated in interactive storytelling sessions with the students, adding warmth and creativity to the event. Parents were also given an insight into the classroom learning processes through different Learning Stations which nurture literacy development at Beaconhouse.
