“Until you dig a hole, you plant a tree, you water it and make it survive, you haven’t done a thing. You are just talking.”
― Wangari Maathai
Beaconhouse School System started a meaningful journey this year to honour Earth Day as a commitment to the earth we live on, rather than just as an occasion. Our school community is truly rooted in the idea of environmental stewardship, as the world celebrates Earth Day.
The entire BSS I-9 Campus, along with campuses around the country, joined together in a massive tree-planting programs, which was an uplifting display of togetherness and purpose. Equipped with shovels and saplings, eager to make a permanent impression on the land, students, teachers, and staff stepped out of the classrooms, sleeves pulled up and hearts full of joy.
With the sky blue, the birds chirping and the leaves whispering softly, our campus became a hive of environmental action. Every member of our school community—from the smallest kindergarteners to the most seasoned seniors—contributed considerably to this group effort. We planted not just seeds but also hopes for a more sustainable and greener future with each tree that was carefully tucked into the ground.
However, our Earth Day event involved more than just planting trees and digging holes—it involved making a serious commitment to protect the environment. We gathered in solemn assembly, hands joined, voices shouted, and vows made to be custodians of the planet.
We made promises, both large and small, to reduce our carbon footprint, adopt sustainable lifestyles, and promote environmental preservation. Every commitment, no matter how tiny, resonated with the hope of a better future. These included energy-saving campaigns, recycling programs, efforts to reduce plastic usage, and biodiversity promotion.
However, our Earth Day celebration reached well beyond our school’s gates as all the campuses and branches of BSS collaborated on this excellent project and the pledge was signed and shared across the board.
Let’s all do our share as custodians of the planet and protectors of the future in the great symphony of life. Since
it is in the arms of nature that we find not only comfort but also inspiration, nourishment but also salvation. And in our shared commitment to protecting the environment, we uncover the real meaning of what it is to be human.
“The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.”
