October is Dyslexia Awareness Month, a time to acknowledge the strengths and challenges of individuals with Dyslexia.

Dyslexia affects approximately 1 in 5 people worldwide, making it a crucial aspect of inclusiveness and diversity. Dyslexia is not only about the reading, it affects various aspects of learning including writing, spelling and organization.

At school, every student has a unique way of learning, and one of the most important things we can do is recognize and support those differences. Dyslexia is a common learning difference that affects reading, writing, and spelling. It’s not a reflection of intelligence, but rather the way the brain processes language. Beaconhouse I-9 campus also conducted a comprehensive Dyslexia Awareness campaign titled “Empowering Every Learner” aimed at educating staff and students about dyslexia, its impact on learning, and effective support strategies.

The campaign included a series of activities and events to raise awareness and foster a better understanding of dyslexia within the school community. It’s crucial that all students and educators understand that dyslexia isn’t a “disability.” It’s simply a different way of processing language. When we support and celebrate different learning styles, we create a positive and welcoming environment for everyone.

Key elements of the campaign included:

Posters created by the Art Department which were displayed around the school, highlighting facts about dyslexia, common myths, and strategies to support dyslexic students.

On 29th October, the ISP Department organized engaging activities with student council members. These included dyslexia simulation exercises, jumbled text reading challenges, mirror writing tasks, and listening and processing exercises to help students experience the difficulties faced by those with dyslexia.

The campaign was aligned with BSS policies on inclusive education, reinforcing the importance of supporting students with learning differences and ensuring that every learner has access to the resources and tools they need to succeed.

The event not only educated but also empowered the school community to be more proactive and informed in supporting dyslexic students. If you’re a parent or educator, keep the conversation going! Raising awareness and understanding can make a huge difference in a child’s school experience and beyond.
