It is easy to be sitting under a stable roof…. It is easy to ignore that homemade dinner and order something. It is easy to not pay attention to anything that you own, all the things and clothes lying around, except for the things that are important to you on a surface level. It is easy to come to a high profile school in an air conditioned vehicle, and it is easy to waste away all that you have and forget all the blessings you’ve been given; but it isn’t easy to have every piece of your existence ripped away by a giant flood wave of neglect and catastrophe. Nothing but murky water all around, nothing but pure defiled debris. But the most important thing, perhaps more murky than the surrounding waters , is your future, washed away. Disease, decay, neglect, destruction abandonment is all that you face, but the irony of it all is that you aren’t responsible for it——imagine!
Such is the situation of almost 30 million people in Pakistan, and it has been so since the past 2 months at least. Even though Pakistan is a country that Itself contributes to not even 1% of the carbon emissions of the world, it’s in the top 10 countries affected by climate change. Some may have heard of these facts elsewhere but what they haven’t heard are the stories of the faultless people in Sindh, Baluchistan, KPK and Punjab. Others don’t know how much this would impact the people and the country, of which 60% is underwater. Glaciers continue to melt and irregular, untimely rains are increasing further threats of more water spreading into areas. This is not only a humanitarian crisis but climatic one too. however It is also known that this country, has been through it all, political turmoil, wars, Victories, improvements, development, disasters, unrest but then again, our most common feature as a nation has always been that of ‘resilience’- we carry on. And so, as many thousands are dying, homes have been destroyed and more are being affected, the people of Pakistan have once again risen to the challenge! Most have seen videos and pictures of these disasters, people were moved, and even though many were unaware of the magnitude of the disaster, people chipped in relief funds, in aid, materially and financially, honestly any way they could. BCP Margalla Campus also organized a donation drive and a bake sale for collecting donations where students contributed generously. Private collections along with NGOs that operated at the forefront of the disasters were also given a hand by many citizens. And even though this help will act as a limited sanctuary considering the scale of the disaster, they would know that the people are there for them. At the core of it, Pakistanis are known for their generosity and they have displayed it once again. We should continue doing whatever we can. We need to assist our people because it is our duty and we are indebted to humanity. Even if you can donate a hundred rupees, do so. Each rupee matters, and in order to stand up and carry on again, we need to face this calamity head on, and this time you can actually help. So do so if you can.
