Research into how the brain works and the psychology of learning shows that learning is a process of integration where the brain is constantly trying to make connections from one experience to another. Theme-based learning supports and mirrors this natural way of learning.
When children see how facts and ideas connect with one another across subjects, they are constructing meaning. When they’re able to communicate that meaning, the learning is accentuated. This is why theme-based learning is so effective. It helps the students make connections, transfer knowledge, and build a bridge between different topics, subjects, and skills that helps them recognize the interconnectedness of the world around them, which leads to more creativity and innovation.
Using Theme-Based Learning, we can help children dive deep into topics they are passionate about. By tapping into children’s natural curiosity, they are motivated and excited to find out more on their own, which eventually helps them become active learners.
To integrate different learning areas and skills by incorporating different intelligences and cater better to children with different learning needs, the BKI E 11 campus took this initiative in the Early years to conduct Theme-Based Learning and has become the pioneer branch in conducting TBL in the nursery and kindergarten. Through TBL, the students have gained lifelong learning experiences by following the set theme in various interesting ways.
Kindergarten conducted theme-based learning on a crucial topic: How to be a water warrior? It started tremendously with the entry event; a gardening activity that helped the kindergarteners realize the importance of water. To integrate students’ knowledge about the uses and importance of water with its health benefits, KG students had a very informative and interactive session with the doctor that empowered their true spirits to be the Water Warriors. The students learned numerous ways of conserving water, both natural and artificial, by integrating the knowledge of all subjects, including 3D model making and instructional writing. There was a grand TBL culmination that marked the display of students’ efforts and learning in the form of port folios, reflective logs, and activity stations where the students explained their learning journey and ways of being a Water Warrior to the guests and parents. To conclude the whole TBL journey, videos of the TBL journey were shared in the form of QR codes. Through such a learning approach, the students are encouraged to show their innate skills and communication skills and build up good teamwork that enables them to excel both academically and emotionally.
