Research into how the brain works and the psychology of learning shows that learning is a process of integration where the brain is constantly trying to make connections from one experience to another. Theme-based learning supports and mirrors this natural way of learning.

When children see how facts and ideas connect with one another across subjects, they are constructing meaning. When they’re able to communicate that meaning, the learning is accentuated. This is why theme-based learning is so effective. It helps the students make connections, transfer knowledge, and build a bridge between different topics, subjects, and skills that helps them recognize the interconnectedness of the world around them, which leads to more creativity and innovation.

Using Theme-Based Learning, we can help children dive deep into topics they are passionate about. By tapping into children’s natural curiosity, they are motivated and excited to find out more on their own, which eventually helps them become active learners.

To integrate different learning areas and skills by incorporating different intelligences and cater better to children with different learning needs, the BKI E 11 campus took this initiative in the Early years to conduct Theme-Based Learning and has become the pioneer branch in conducting TBL in the nursery and kindergarten. Through TBL, the students have gained lifelong learning experiences by following the set theme in various interesting ways.

Nurseries had a remarkable TBL journey with the intriguing driving question, Why are my clothes colourful? It started with Kashmir Day, when the little learners were all dressed up in Kashmiri attire to show solidarity with Kashmir. The students learned about the different types of fabrics they wear and the sources from which they are obtained. They had various hands-on activities to learn textile production techniques such as tie and dye and weaving. Students displayed their unique handmade crafts, exotic tie-and-dye shirts, and intricate weaving patterns marvelously and explained their whole TBL journey with the invited guests and parents on the culmination day.
