“I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions.”

Stephen R. Covey

The Spark of Change

It all started with a spark.

A thought struck the vibrant minds of the Grade 5 Lighthouse Team—“What can we do about the environmental issues our planet is facing?” Inspired and driven by purpose, the students approached their head, Ms. Samar, not with a formal proposal, but with a big sheet of paper and a pencil, sketching out a map of a vision they were determined to bring to life.

A Theme with Purpose

Their excitement was contagious. With Ms. Samar’s encouragement and guidance, they refined their idea and chose a theme that echoed the urgency of our times:
Renewable Energy and How Countries Are Addressing Climate Change.

It was a topic that not only resonated with Earth Day but also empowered students to think globally and act meaningfully.

From Vision to Action

From that moment, there was no looking back.

Plans were made, roles were assigned, and soon, the entire Grade 5 cohort was involved. Despite academic assessments, debates, and their usual responsibilities, the students remained focused and committed. The idea of organizing their very own Mock Model United Nations (Mock MUN) had taken root—and they were determined to make it bloom.

Research and Readiness with BYOAD

Each group of students chose the country they had to represent. Research began in earnest. Flags were printed, data was collected, and PowerPoint slides took shape. Thanks to the BYOAD (Bring Your Own Approved Device) initiative, students used their Chromebooks in the classroom to explore their assigned nation’s stance on climate action, energy reforms, and global cooperation.

They weren’t just preparing for a presentation—they were becoming global citizens.

Stepping Into the Role of Diplomats

Before the event began, each student proudly received a Diplomat Card, officially welcoming them into their role as representatives of their assigned countries. This small but symbolic gesture brought a sense of authenticity, responsibility, and pride.

The Big Day – Mock MUN in Action

The room buzzed with nervous energy and excitement as students stepped into the shoes of young diplomats. With confidence and clarity, they presented their findings, answered critical questions, and engaged in meaningful dialogue.
It was a powerful sight—students speaking passionately, representing nations, and advocating for the Earth.

 Learning from the Experts

The event was honored by esteemed judges:

  • Mr. Tanvir Ahmed from UNHCR

  • Ms. Saira Aamir IC from the I-9 Campus

  • Mr. Farhan and Ms. Daneen, O Level students

  • Accompanied by their teacher Ms. Maria

Their encouragement and thoughtful feedback made the experience all the more enriching.

A memorable highlight was when Mr. Tanveer Ahmed presented gift packs from UNHCR to the best presenters, recognizing their clarity, confidence, and commitment to the cause.

A Movement, Not Just a Moment

But beyond the presentations and applause, something even more profound happened: students realized their voices matter. They learned that change doesn’t always begin with policies—it begins with awareness, with action, and sometimes, with a simple idea shared on a big piece of paper.

“My Power, My Planet” wasn’t just an Earth Day theme. It became a movement—an unforgettable journey of leadership, learning, and the belief that even the youngest among us can lead the way to a brighter, greener future.
