The first ‘Right2Write’ workshop was conducted at BCP Multan Campus on October 27, 2021 Wednesday. The event was organized under the auspices of the Honorable Principal Madam Saadia Yaqub and conducted by the Access Center’s resident Career Advisor Syed Ali Tahir. Venue of the workshop was the state of the art Library of the BCP Multan campus.
The purpose of the workshop was to educate students regarding the importance of powerful written expression. The workshop aimed to introduce the participants to ‘Iterative Design’ and its possible implementation in the writing process. The speaker impressed upon the gathering that their college essays and writing portfolios were their veritable virtual ambassadors when being assessed by college admissions committees.
The importance of reasoned and well written college essays and personal statements was shared with the participating students. The students were told about some of the common mistakes made by writers. They were also briefed on how to work around these pitfalls. The workshop also introduced the participants to the importance of contributing to newspapers and journals. The presenter shared easy approaches to share writing portfolios and gain exposure. Online platforms such as Medium, Journo Portfolio and e-Papers such as the Daily Times and Dawn were suggested.
Moving forward, the participants were introduced to the concept of ‘Iterative Design’. This engineering philosophy was elaborated by showing a diagram of a process utilizing this approach. Feedback implementation and constant improvement emanating from this approach were especially appreciated by the participants. At the end a suggested reading list was also shared with the participating students.
The workshop ended with an inspirational ending note from Madam Saadia Yaqub. She urged students to utilize what they had learned in the workshop. Furthermore, she stated that students should write to publish at well renowned newspapers and journals and unabashedly share their writing for criticism.
